Early 20th Century

Civil Rights Era

The Auburn district played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement. It was the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and home to many influential civil rights organizations, including the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Present Day

Today, the Auburn district continues to be an important cultural and historical landmark. It is home to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and numerous other sites that preserve and celebrate African American history and culture.
